The Art and the Act of Coaching – Matt Smith

Matt Smith is a UKSCA Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach, with an honours degree in Sport, Health and Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Sports Coaching. Matt has gained a wealth of in-the-trenches experience in elite sport, personal training and fitness industry environments around the world. Always keen to update his knowledge, Matt has completed all four Athletes’ Performance mentorships and interned with internationally renowned coach Michael Boyle. During this year’s incredible summer of sport, Matt prepared the GB Women’s Basketball U20 Team for their European Championships and was a Gamesmaker at both the Olympics and Paralympics.

Countless coaches have all the book smarts but the most important part of being a successful Strength and Condtioning Coach is to actually be able to COACH. In this presentation, Matt will explore the role of the coach and the coaching process and provide strategies for success to positively impact upon your athletes performance and improve your own coaching style.

 

Building the Olympians Training Program – Rhys Ingram

Rhys Ingram works for the English Institute of Sport based at Lee Valley Athletics Centre, where he is Lead Strength & Conditioning Coach for British Fencing as well as delivering S&C support to athletes from several Olympic, Paralympic and Winter Olympic disciplines. He has a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science from UWIC, MSc in S&C from Middlesex University as well as being accredited by the UKSCA and NSCA. Previously Rhys has worked at Hartpury College, Bedford Blues and the National Fencing Academy.

In this presentation, Rhys will discuss the process he undergoes whilst creating an athlete’s training program, including considerations for athlete’s in-season, off-season and rehabilitation training.  He will examine how he works to achieve the right balance between both the ‘Science’ and the ‘Art’ of coaching so as to ensure his athletes arrive at major competitions prepared to perform! Rhys has worked with numerous 2012 Olympians, and this is a rare occasion that you will be able to hear first hand of the prep and build upto the games as well a pose your questions to rhys.
